About us
The Callows Studio was founded in the countryside near Nenagh, County Tipperary, with a simple aim: to transform everyday materials into timeless design pieces. Working with cement, copper oxide and iron oxide, we create candles that are both contemporary and enduring.
Our studio is situated beside a lush callow (caladh) — one of Ireland’s natural floodplain meadows — near the River Shannon. This landscape shapes how we work: slowly, thoughtfully, and by hand. Every candle begins life as a raw cement vessel, crafted in our studio and designed to last.
The Classic Collection
Our Classic Collection celebrates a minimalist design. These candles are defined by clean lines, soft textures, and a carefully curated palette of white, grey, charcoal, and blush. Each vessel is hand-cast, embracing the subtle variations that naturally occur in cement.
Designed for everyday living, the Classic Collection offers understated elegance and timeless simplicity. Every candle is filled with natural soy wax for a clean, even burn.
The Callows Collection
The Callows Collection is where experimentation and unpredictability take centre stage. Cement is naturally porous and open to change, allowing us to introduce copper oxide, iron oxide, or both directly into the material. Over time, these metals react within the cement, slowly staining it from the inside out.
Copper creates soft blue tones, iron produces deep rust hues, and where the two meet, stone-like shades emerge. These colours are not painted or applied — they are natural reactions shaped by time and chemistry. While the process can never be fully controlled, careful testing allows us to guide it.
No two vessels are ever the same. Each candle is a true one-of-a-kind piece, with its own character, colour, and texture — a striking, naturally original design. As the name suggests, every Quantity One candle exists as a single, unique object, individually made and filled with natural soy wax.
