About us

The Callows Studio was founded in the countryside near Nenagh, County Tipperary with a simple idea: to turn raw, everyday materials into timeless design pieces. We work with cement, copper and iron to create candles that feel both modern and enduring.
On the edge of a lush callow (caladh) – one of Ireland’s native floodplain meadows - near the River Shannon our studio is devoted to handcrafting distinctive cement candles.
Each candle begins its journey as a cement vessel, treated as a natural canvas – raw, porous, and open to change. Here we introduce copper, iron, or both, allowing the metals to react and slowly stain the cement from within.
The result is never entirely predictable, but through trial and error we have found ways to somewhat control the process. Blues emerge from copper, deep russets from iron, and in places the two meet, fusing into shades that appear almost geological – like something unearthed rather than made. These vivid patinas are not applied finishes but natural transformations, shaped by time and chemistry.
No two vessels are ever alike. Each one carries its own history in colour and texture.
The Quantity One Collection captures this approach: one-of-a-kind pieces with vivid patinas that emerge naturally through our process.
Each vessel is individually made, with subtle variations that make no two alike, and are filled with natural unscented soy wax for a clean, minimalist burn.
